How to Connect with People

How To Connect With People & Impact Lives

By Eryka T. Johnson

In today’s society, it is important to recognize that people matter. In anything you do, it will involve engaging with others and using the power of influence to make a difference. This article deals with how to connect with people and impact lives, particularly when pursuing your purpose.

This past week, I visited a new nail salon for the first time. When I walked in, I was escorted to the back of the salon where all the pedicure stations were located. I sat down in one of the chairs and my nail technician came over.

She sat on her stool and began right away with the pedicure. But she forgot something – she never said anything to me or smiled at me or acknowledged me. Why? She was on her cell phone.

She talked on the cell phone for nearly 20 minutes until the call finally dropped. Then, she turns to me and says “I’m sorry.”

What a mistake!

This incident helped me to understand the fact that purpose and fulfilling purpose is all about relationships and connecting with others.

Yes, you can go about your business thinking that you are being effective fulfilling purpose. But, you will never be impactful if you fail to connect with people.

How do you properly serve others without finding out their needs?

Typically, I get the works when I visit a nail salon – the hot stones, fresh orange scrub, and paraffin wax. But because the nail technician failed to connect with me and create the proper environment for building relationship, I got the bare minimum.

You have the power to make people engage or disengage when it comes to presenting your gift, talents, or purpose. To have the greatest impact, here are two ideas that you many want to consider.

    • Survey your tribe and find out what challenges they need help with overcoming. Try a free service called www.surveymonkey.com. Then, provide exactly what they need.
    • Be real and authentic. Don’t be afraid to share your life with others. Someone may need to hear your story. Besides, people like to connect with people.

What ways do you use to connect with people? Please share.
