For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV)
This scripture starts my list of favorites, but for some time, I did not fully grasp its meaning. While it can pertain to fear generated from the thought of making the wrong decision, it also relates to the fact that as followers of Christ we should not be afraid to witness to others and express our love for God.
The fear of expressing one’s love for God can be associated with new Christians because it may be likely that the people surrounding them are not on the same path. I can honestly say that I was once in this place particularly when it came to witnessing to others and sharing my testimony. The desire to talk about God had immensely grown inside of me but I would only talk to those on the same path as I. It was difficult to start a conversation about God with someone that did not have a personal relationship with Him. Once I realized that I could no longer hide my relationship with God as I was falling deeper in love with Him, I began to share. Besides, He has never denied me, so it was unfair of me to lock my love for Him in a box.
Don’t worry if you feel like you possess this fear because there is something you can do to get rid of it.
- Get acquainted with proclaiming your love for God out loud. Now, you don’t have to scream it at the top of your lungs, but simply talk to Him. Begin to converse with God out loud.
- Once you are comfortable talking to Him and telling Him how you feel, nothing can hold you back from declaring your feelings for your Lord and Savior to others. When God is on your side, whom or what should you fear? That’s right, nothing!
- If you feel the urge to bring God into a conversation, it can easily be done. For example, if someone has a problem and you know a story from the Bible that is relative, allude to it and take it from there.
Like 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) states, “God hath not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. When you find yourself living by the words of this verse, nothing else will be able to evoke that fear that you once stumbled upon!
